Matter accessory

also: Matter device, Matter-compatible device

A smart home device that implements the Matter protocol standard, enabling interoperability between different manufacturers' IoT devices on a unified network.

A Matter accessory is any smart home device—such as a light bulb, thermostat, door lock, or sensor—that conforms to the Matter standard, an open-source connectivity protocol developed by the Connectivity Standards Institute (formerly the Zigbee Alliance). Matter accessories communicate securely over Thread, WiFi, or Bluetooth, allowing them to work together regardless of manufacturer.

The primary advantage of Matter accessories is interoperability. Rather than being locked into proprietary ecosystems (like Amazon Alexa or Google Home exclusively), a Matter-certified light switch can work with any Matter-compatible hub or voice assistant. This reduces vendor lock-in and allows users to mix devices from different brands seamlessly.

Example: A user could pair a Matter-compatible smart bulb from Manufacturer A, a Matter door lock from Manufacturer B, and control both through a Matter hub running open-source software on a Linux machine, without needing separate proprietary apps for each device.
