A Linux namespace that isolates hostname and NIS domain name, allowing containers and processes to have their own independent identity without affecting the host system.
The UTS (UNIX Timesharing System) namespace is one of several Linux namespaces that provides isolation of system identifiers. It allows different processes to have different hostnames and NIS domain names, even though they share the same kernel.
When you create a container or use unshare with the --uts flag, processes in that namespace can set their own hostname via hostname command without affecting other namespaces. For example, a Docker container might have hostname webapp-1 while the host machine is production-server.
The --uts flag in unshare or clone() system call creates a new UTS namespace. This is essential for containerization, allowing each container to present itself as a separate system with its own identity.
